Comments:

League position: 20th Sunderland had now failed to score a first-half goal in 19 games so far in this Premier League season; a joint high with fellow strugglers Crystal Palace. The Black Cats' previous game was a 4-0 win at Crystal Palace; their biggest away win in the Premier League since 1999. This was their biggest home defeat since Aston Villa's 4-0 win in the Premier League on 14 March 2015. Wahbi Khazri was booked in the fourth minute of added time in the second-half. Sunderland manager David Moyes said: "We had a great chance to maybe move out of the bottom three had the games gone for us, but unfortunately it didn't fall for us. Southampton themselves had fragile confidence, but they got a goal off their centre-forward's arm."

League position: 11th This equalled Southampton's biggest-ever away win in the top division. They also won 4-0 at Queens Park Rangers on 2 February 1985 and Leicester City on 8 December 2001, and 6-2 at Chelsea on 2 September 1967. Manolo Gabbiadini became the 16th player to score three goals in his first two Premier League appearances; the first since Manchester United's Zlatan Ibrahimović in August 2016. He also became the second player to score in both of his first two Premier Leagye appearances for Southampton after Henri Camara in 2005. On the last two occasions that the Saints had scored four goals in an away game in the Premier League, the opponents were relegated at the end of the season (Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2003-04 and Aston Villa in 2015-16). Shane Long scored in the second minute of added time in the second-half. Southampton manager Claude Puel said: "Today, first of all, was about the clean sheet. We showed a very good spirit and attitude in a difficult game."
