Comments:

League position: 18th Losing the reverse fixture 8-0 in October was Sunderland's biggest league defeat since losing at Watford by the same score line on 25 September 1982. That defeat in October was their only defeat to Southampton in the last ten league and cup meetings. The Black Cats had now won just two of their last 11 Premier League matches (five defeats) scoring a mere seven goals.

Comments:

League position: 7th Before this match, Southampton had not conceded a penalty this season. The Saints won the reverse fixture 8-0 in October; their biggest margin of victory in a league match since 1921. Southampton had now lost four of their last five away matches. This was Southampton’s 600th all-time top flight defeat. The Saints now had 57 points, already their best ever Premier League haul with three games still to play. Prior to this match, Kelvin Davies had saved the previous three penalties he had faced. No keeper has saved four consecutive penalties in the Premier League history. Southampton were unbeaten in their last six league visits to the Stadium of Light (five draws).
