Comments:

League position: 19th With this victory, Sunderland avoided losing six consecutive Premier League games for the first time since October 2013. Jermain Defoe scored in the second minute of added time in the second half. He had therefore scored more than once in a Premier League game for the first time since 1 December 2012. Lee Cattermole was booked in the fifth minute of added time in the second half. The Premier League’s Goal Accreditation Panel ruled on the following: - Sunderland’s first goal against Aston Villa on Saturday 2nd January 2016 was in fact a Micah Richards own goal and has therefore not been credited to Patrick Van Aanholt. (Circular 14 – 11th January 2016)

Comments:

League position: 20th Aston Villa had now taken eight points from their opening 20 games of this Premier League season. Only two teams have claimed fewer points at this stage in the competition's history (six by Sunderland in 2005-06 and seven by Derby County in 2007-08) Villa had not won in the Premier League since the opening day of the season at AFC Bournemouth (lost 14). Carles Gil’s goal was the 500th in the 2015-16 Premier League season. Rudy Gestede was booked after Lee Cattermole in the fifth minute of added time in the second half.
