Comments:

League position: 18th At the eighth attempt, this was Stoke City's first win in the Premier League in 2016-17. The last time they had failed to win any of their first seven games in a top division season was in 1973-74. Joe Allen had now equalled his highest-ever total of goals in a Premier League season (also four in 2011-12 for Swansea City). He had now scored in four consecutive games for the first time in his senior career (three in the Premier League for Stoke City and one for Wales) The Potters had now kept their first clean sheet in their last 18 Premier League games. Joe Allen scored in the first minute of added time in the first half.

Comments:

League position: 20th Sunderland became only the second team to fail to win any of their opening eight games in the top division in consecutive seasons (also Bury in 1904-05 and 1905-06). Stoke City's victory meant the Black Cats were now the only team in the division without a win in the Premier League in this season. Only Jermain Defoe and Patrick Van Aanholt had scored for them so far in this Premier League season. Billy Jones was booked in the third minute of added time in the second half.
