Comments:

League position: 11th Southampton had now failed to score in nine of their last 12 Premier League games, including three of their four games so far in 2017-18. The Saints had now scored only one goal in open play in their last six games in the Premier League. They had now won two of their last 12 games in the Premier League (lost five). Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino said: "They were better in the first-half especially with long balls and second balls. Physically, they were fresher than us. They created enough to score. We have to learn from today. In the second-half, we were much better but we couldn't create. The game is 22 players to analyse not just 11. I will talk about my team and the other manager will talk about his. They had a lot of people behind the ball and it was difficult for us. It was tough. They were better than us in the first-half."

Comments:

League position: 4th Watford had now won consecutive away games in the Premier League for only the second time (also December 2015). The Hornets had now kept a clean sheet in three consecutive Premier League games for the first time since 29 October 2016. Their seven goals in the Premier League so far in this season had now been scored by six different players with only Abdoulaye Doucouré scoring more than once. Watford manager Marco Silva said: “We deserved the three points. We controlled the match. It’s not easy to come here to Southampton and control all the match. They [the Watford players] had a lot of very good ball possession, they create some play down the sides with the idea was always to play high, they created a lot of chances between the lines and they controlled everything. But we do a lot of work with our players and we showed some good football moments and very good transition in our physical organisation as well."
