Comments:

League position: 10th Only AFC Bournemouth had now been awarded as many penalties as Southampton in the Premier League in 2017 (seven). This was the first time since the opening day of the 2016-17 season that the Saints had come from behind at half-time in a Premier League game to earn a point. They had failed to score in eight of their preceding nine home games in the Premier League. Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino said: “I think the anxiety to try to score the second sometimes you lost control. Maybe that is my responsibility because I tell my players we have to play more direct in the second-half to try to create something close to the box because Newcastle defensively are really good and close the penetrating passes really well and sometimes you have to break the game, to be a little bit chaotic to try and create something.”

Comments:

League position: 9th Newcastle United scored an away goal in the first-half of a Premier League game for the first time since a 1-5 defeat at Crystal Palace on 28 November 2015. The Magpies had now taken six points from their last 15 away games in the Premier League (won one, lost 11). Isaac Hayden scored his first goal in the Premier League in his eighth appearance in the competition. Newcastle United Rafa Benitez said: “I am disappointed that 3,200 fans came on a Sunday and had another long trip. It was a pity not to give them the chance not to go back with the three points. I am sure some will be happy. I like the team with a lot of the things we did but I was not happy with the goals we conceded. Overall it was a good performance and great game to watch for everybody.”
