Comments:

League position: 10th Southampton had failed to score in ten of their Premier League home games so far in 2017. Only Portsmouth (11 in 2007) had failed to score in more in a calendar year. Prior to this game, the Saints had scored only nine goals in this Premier League season; their fewest after the first 12 games of a Premier League season since 1998-99. This was Charlie Austin's 250th career league appearance (127 goals). Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino said: "I was really pleased for my players because we have been working really well and I think we deserved to win. Sometimes it has been frustrating when we've been unable to convert good performances to victories, but today we played a really good game. Especially in the second-half, after Everton equalised, the team continued the same ideas to play with tempo, with the ball on the floor and we scored four good goals."

League position: 16th Everton had now conceded 20 goals and failed to keep a clean sheet in seven games played under caretaker manger David Unsworth. They had now conceded 28 goals in the Premier League so far in this season; their most after 13 games of a league season since 1958-59 (40). The Toffees were now without a win in their last 15 away games in the Premier League; their worst such run since December 1997. Everton caretaker manager David Unsworth said: "Absolutely gutted. The second-half performance from all our team was unacceptable. I'm sorry for all the Everton fans who came down here and all the ones who were watching as well. We can't keep performing like this, it's just not good enough. We are in a tough moment and we have a massive week ahead of us."
