League position: 9th Southampton failed to score in a home game for the first time since Tottenham Hotspur's 2-0 win at St Mary's in the Premier League on 19 December 2015. They were unbeaten in 12 home league and cup games since a 2-1 defeat by Chelsea on 27 February 2016 (won nine). The Saints had now lost two of their last ten games in all competitions (won five).

The Blues had now kept four consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League for the first time since August 2010.
