Comments:

League position: 7th Sadio Mane scored the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history. His three goals came in the space of two minutes and 56 seconds to take the Saints into a 3-0 lead inside the opening 16 minutes. His goals had also broken the record for the earliest completion of a hat-trick in a Premier League game. It was previously held by Manchester United's Dwight Yorke in 21 minutes against Arsenal on 25 February 2001. The fastest known hat-trick in English league football remained at two minutes and 20 seconds by James Hayter for AFC Bournemouth versus Wrexham on 24 February 2004. The only known possibly quicker league threesome was scored by Jimmy Scarth who netted three in two minutes for Gillingham versus Leyton Orient in November 1952 in Division Three (South). As this was long before the days of every game being electronically timed, the exact duration remains debatable. In their final home game of the 2014-15 campaign, this victory meant that the Saints had equalled the club’s Premier League record of 11 home wins in a season, first achieved in 2000-01 season. Steven Davis made his 100th Premier League appearance for the Saints. He also played in 102 league and cup games for Aston Villa between 2004 and 2006. 11 of Graziano Pelle's 12 Premier League goals in this season had been scored at St. Mary's Stadium. Southampton recorded the third fastest 5-0 lead in the Premier League (38 minutes). The two fastest were both against Southampton; by Arsenal in 26 minutes on 7 May 2003 and by Everton in 35 minutes on 16 November 1996. Sadio Mane’s hat-trick was Southampton’s sixth in the Premier League. Matt Le Tissier scored four of them while James Beattie netted the other. It was the Saints' first hat-trick since 17 March 2012 by Rickie Lambert in a 3-2 win at Millwall in the League Championship. This was the second time that they had scored six goals in a Premier League game at St Mary's in 2014-15 following their 8-0 drubbing of Sunderland on 18 October.

Comments:

League position: 15th Victory for Aston Villa would have made it three Premier League wins in a row for the first time in five years. This was the first time they had conceded six goals in a game since 23 December 2012 in a 0-8 trashing at Chelsea in the Premier League. With one game to play, Villa only had 37 points. Their lowest season tally to date was 38 in 2011-12 and 2013-14. Christian Benteke had now scored 11 goals in his last ten Premier League appearances. He had now made 99 appearances for Aston Villa in all competitions, scoring 49 goals. Villa had now scored 500 goals in their Premier League away games. The Villans had now conceded 6,000 all-time top flight goals and 4,005 all-time away league goals.
