Comments:

League position: 17th This was new manager Ralph Hasenhüttl's first home game in charge. This was Southampton's first win in their last nine home games in the Premier League (lost three). They became the last team in the top four divisions to win a home league game in this season. They scored three or more goals for the first time in their last 35 games in all competitions since a 3-2 win at West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on 3 February 2018. The Saints avoided setting a new club record of 13 games in the Premier League without a win. Charlie Austin had now scored in each of his five games against Arsenal in the Premier League. Southampton now taken a total 901 points from their games in the Premier League (played 751, won 231, lost 312).

League position: 5th This was Arsenal's first defeat in their last 23 games in all competitions since losing at Chelsea in the Premier League on 18 August 2018. They had now scored two or more goals in eight consecutive away games in the top division for only the second time; also from April to October in 1930 in League Division One. The Gunners had yet to led at half-time in any of their 17 games so far in this Premier League season (losing in five). They had now scored 20 goals in their away games so far in this Premier League season (played eight); as many as they scored in their 19 away league games in the previous season.
