Romania had failed to win their opening group game in any of their five previous appearances at the UEFA European Championships tournaments (lost two). . They had now scored three or more goals for the second time in their 17 games at UEFA European Championship tournaments; previously a 3-2 win against England in a Group A game at Euro 2000 in Charleroi, France - their only previous victory at the Euro finals. .
