Romania had the best of the first half until the 22nd minute when Ermir Lenjani had a golden opportunity to put Albania ahead but fired over the bar. From that point on Albania dominated and Armando Sadiku scored with a header just before half-time. Albania were fortunate in the 72nd minute when a certain goal for Romania was forestalled by an incorrect linesman call for off-side. On 76 minutes Florin Andone hit the bar but Romania's efforts to equalise, let alone win the game were in vain. It was to be an historic night for Albanian football as they recorded their first ever win in a major tournament.
