Kick-off: 6.00pm local (5.00pm BST). 30 years to the day since their last game at a major tournament (versus Brazil in the 1986 World Cup), Northern Ireland played their first ever game at the European Championship finals. Poland had been the leading scorers during the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign with a total of 33 goals. They virtually pinned the Northern Irish in to their own half for the first 15 minutes but it wasn't until just after the half-hour mark when the Poles created the first clear chance. Arkadiusz Milik missed from only eight yards. They went close again on 38 minutes when Bartosz Kapustka produced a flying save from Michael McGovern. The Polish pressure finally paid dividends when McGovern was beaten six minutes after the break by Milik's low left-footed drive. Substitute Conor Washington gave Poland their first scare after 70 minutes but Wojciech Szczesny saved bravely at his feet. Northern Ireland fought valiently in search of an equaliser but, at the seventh attempt, Poland duly won their first-ever game at a European championship finals.
