Paraguay v USA, 11 June 2016

Kick-off: 7.00pm local (7.00pm ET) USA needed to win or draw this game - a loss would have meant exit from the tournament. Only a win would do for Paraguay. An uneventful first 27 minutes, with Paraguay having the better chances, until that man Dempsey stepped up and fired one in. Whilst the first half was marked by a moment of class from Dempsey - the second half began with two moments of madness from Yedlin who picked up two yellows in quick succession, reducing the USA to 10 men and resulting in Dempsey's substitution in favour of Orozco. The USA managed to hang on in a second half dominated by professional fouls, important saves by Brad Guzan and increasingly desperate efforts by Paraguay. As if to increase Paraguay's frustration to breaking point, they had a goal disallowed for offside in the 89th minute and despite 6 minutes of added time (largely due to the referee suffering from cramp) Paraguay were unable to break down the USA's defences.
