With this victory, Conference side Luton Town became the first non-league team to knock a Premier League club out of the FA Cup. It was the first time a non-league club had beaten a top-flight club in the competition since Sutton United famously overcame Coventry City in 1989. It was also the first time a non-league outfit had won at the home of a top division club since Altrincham triumphed at Birmingham City's St Andrews' in 1986.
