Comments:

League position: 17th By avoiding defeat, Newcastle United ended a run of eight successive Premier League losses; their most consecutive run of defeats since the club record of ten in 1977. They also ended a run of four successive home defeats. They had only ever lost more than four once before. That was in 1953 with a run of six. They had now gone nine games without a win in the Premier League for the first time since May 2009 - the month they were most recently relegated to the League Championship. In the week leading up to this game, United's temporary manager John Carver described himself as " the best coach in the Premier League". The Magpies had now lost just one of their last seven Premier League meetings with the Baggies (four wins). Before the point gained here, their last points were gained with a 1-0 win against Aston Villa on 28 February.

League position: 13th The draw secured West Bromwich Albion’s Premier League status for next season. Victory would have made it three away league match wins in a row for the Baggies; something they had yet to achieve in the Premier League. Albion had now only won one of their last 14 league visits to St James’ Park (nine defeats). Victor Anichebe's goal was the 900th scored in the Premier League in this season.
