Comments:

League position: 6th Newcastle United had now lost only one of their last ten home games in the Premier League (won six). They had now lost only two of their last 17 home league games (won 11). The Magpies had now equalled their highest points tally (14) after their first nine games of a Premier League season (also 2011-12). Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez said: "Today was an even game, we were both well organised and in the end it was a good goal. The main thing is that we got three points. In this case it was a little bit lucky, but Merino had the determination and that was key in the end. We needed to create something more. We couldn’t do it but in the end we score from a set-piece, and they can make the difference. We were on top of them and have this control, then a little bit of luck, which we had to get the three points."

Comments:

League position: 20th Crystal Palace had now failed to score in their last seven Premier League away games; their longest such run in the top division. The Eagles were now the only team who had yet to keep a clean sheet in this Premier League season (played nine). Palace had now drawn only one of the 29 games they had played in the Premier League in 2017. Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson said: "The quality of our play was very good. We need more than a goal to take one point and set plays are always a problem. It [the goal] was unfortunate as our player got his head to the ball but headed it against the Newcastle bloke. I cannot criticise our performance. From the first minute to the last it was everything I expected and under normal circumstances would have got us a result."
