Dwight Gayle had now scored 29 league goals for the Magpies since the start of the previous season; 12 more than any other player. The Blues failed to score for the first time in their last nine games in the Premier League. Due to this result and Liverpool's win against Brighton and Hove Albion on this day, Chelsea did not qualify for the UEFA Champions League and would now play in the UEFA Europa League in 2018-19.
