Comments:

This was new manager Steve Bruce's first Premier League game in charge of Newcastle United. His appointment meant that eight English managers would be in charge of Premier League clubs for the first time since 2004. The Magpies had won six of their last eight homes games in the Premier League in the previous season. They remained without a win their opening game of a league season since 2012 against Tottenham Hotspur (since lost six, drawn one). Only one of the last 26 games at St James' Park in the Premier League had now ended in a draw.

Comments:

This was Arsenal's opening game of this Premier League season. They kept only one clean sheet in their away games in the division in the previous season; their fewest in a league season since 1967-68 in League Division One (also one). The Gunners named two English teenagers (Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson) in their starting line-up for a game in the Premier League for the first time since 21 February 1998 in a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace (Paolo Vernazza and Matthew Upson). Since his Premier League debut in February 2018, only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (36) had now scored more goals in the division than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (33).
