Comments:

League position: 19th This was Middlesbrough's first win in their last 17 games in the Premier League. Boro became the last team in the top five European leagues and England's top four division to win a league game in 2017. With his late substitute appearance, Rudy Gestede ended a Premier League record run of 43 games without playing in a winning team. Middlesbrough caretaker manager Steve Agnew said: "It feels great. Everybody is absolutely delighted with the three points. We had to defend for long spells but we got the goal early. I'm so proud of the players. Clean sheets are obviously something you build on. I think it was important, the early goal. It gave everybody a lift and a confidence to see the game through."

League position: 20th Sunderland were now without a win in their last nine games in the Premier League (lost seven). The Black Cats had now lost their last four away games in the Premier League without scoring. They had now trailed for 20 hours and 22 minutes during their Premier League games so far in this season; longer than any other team. Sunderland manager David Moyes said: "I've never been in this position before so it's new to me. It's something I'm not enjoying. We didn't get a good result but I thought we played well. It was a poor goal that we gave away but I can't fault the players or their efforts. We tried to build play up, make opportunities, but I wasn't disappointed with the performance. While there's a chance, we'll keep going."
