Comments:

League position: 19th Relegated Middlesbrough had now won one of their last 20 games in the Premier League (lost 12). With his first goal in the Premier League in his 26th competition appearance, Patrick Bamford ended a run of 33 appearances without a goal in all competitions since 14 April 2015 for Middlesbrough against Wolverhampton Wanderers. With this being the final game at the Riverside Stadium in 2016-17, Boro scored 17 goals in their home games in the Premier League in the season; only bottom-of-the-table Sunderland scored fewer (16). Middlesbrough caretaker manager Steve Agnew said: "The supporters have been fantastic all season. They've waited a long time to get back in the Premier League and we haven't given them enough, we owed them that lap of appreciation. Times like this are disappointing for all of us but most importantly it's about Middlesbrough getting into a position and a fantastic opportunity to bounce back."

League position: 9th Southampton were without a win and scored only one goal in their preceding five games in the Premier League. The Saints had now won four of their last seven away games in the Premier League. Nathan Redmond had scored eight goals this season in all competitions (seven in the Premier League); his career best in a single season. Southampton manager Claude Puel: "We made seven changes and it's important for the squad - many players improve and can show they have a good spirit. I hope we can finish strong with the two last games at home. I'm satisfied because we have done good work with all the players."
