Comments:

Romelu Lukaku had now scored on his league debuts for Anderlecht, West Bromwich Albion, Everton and Manchester United. Romelu Lukaku became the fourth player to score two goals on their Premier League debut for United after Marcus Rashford (2016), James Wilson (2014) and Ruud Van Nistelrooy (2001). José Mourinho had now not lost a home match on a Sunday in all competitions during his managerial career (played 113, won 87) or lost on the opening weekend of a Premier League season (won eight, drawn one). Manchester United manager José Mourinho said: “The fact that we won the match was the most important thing because many times last season we deserved to win and we didn’t. But I think the quality of our performance, based on confidence levels was really high. I’m not going to say that the performance was perfect because it wasn’t perfect. We made our mistakes, we have room for improvement obviously. But that was a solid performance.”

Comments:

This was West Ham United's heaviest opening game defeat since 2002 when they lost 4-0 at Newcastle United in the Premier League. On his Hammers debut, Joe Hart failed in his attempt to become the first away goalkeeper to keep three clean sheets at Old Trafford in the Premier League. His previous two came when playing for Manchester City in March 2014 and October 2015. Javier Hernández, also making his debut for West Ham in this game, scored 37 goals in 103 Premier League games for Manchester United. West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic said: “It was a very bad result for us, but they were much better than us today in every department of the game. They were better without the ball, they were better with the ball. We knew that they had that individual quality, pace, strength and everything. We don’t want to let them be in one against one situation. We wanted to create two against one when they had the ball, we can cope with that."
