Having finished as runners-up, United finished in their highest position for five years since they won the title under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012-13. The Red Devils won every game in this Premier League season when they scored the first goal (21 games); only Portsmouth in 2007-08 (14 games) had matched this feat. Since the start of the 2016-17 season, they had now kept more clean sheets in the Premier League than any other team (36).

They had now lost six of their last nine games in the Premier League (won one). This was the first time that the Hornets had finished a top division season with an away game since 1987-88 when they lost 2-1 at Luton Town in League Division One. Heurelho Gomes became the second player to make 100 appearances for Watford in the Premier League after Troy Deeney (104).
