Comments:

Prior to this match, the 2013 Final against Wigan Athletic was the only time in Manchester City's last 25 FA Cup ties that they had failed to score. Following the previous week's defeat to Arsenal, Manchester City had now lost consecutive home matches by two or more goals for the first time in seven years when they lost to Arsenal and Everton in February 2008. Manchester City have now gone five home games without keeping a clean sheet. This result meant that Manchester City had gone out in the FA Cup for two years running to lower division teams, so for the first time since 1960. With Chelsea losing at home to Bradford City, the last time the current top two teams in the top-flight exited the FA Cup on the same day was on 6 January 1951 (coincidentally, Middlesbrough at Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur at Huddersfield Town). City had spent the previous week in a warm-weather training camp in Abu Dhabi, arriving back in the UK less than 24 hours before this game.

Comments:

Middlesbrough remained unbeaten in four FA Cup ties at Manchester City. Prior to this game, they had won only one of their last 11 FA Cup ties against top flight opposition. Middlesbrough's best-ever FA Cup run saw them reach the Final in 1997 where they were beaten by Chelsea at Wembley. Kike scored in the third minute of added time in the second half. Yanic Wildschut replaced Patrick Bamford in the fourth minute of added time in the second half.
