Kick-Off: 7.30pm
This game was the first competitive floodlit Manchester derby.
The game was a break with tradition as Charity Shield games were typically played at the home ground of the League champions, but as Old Trafford had yet to install lights, the game was played at Maine Road.
David Gaskell's debut appearance came about ten years before substitutes were introduced. Roy Wood was injured during the first-half and carried off. Duncan Edwards took over in goal while United continued with ten men. During half-time, Matt Busby and City manager Les McDowall agreed that a sub could take Wood's place. The referee went along with the arrangement. Gaskell was just 16 years and 19 days old and had just signed for United from Wigan Schoolboys. He had attended the match as a spectator and, as no reserve keeper was allowed, Gaskell was pressed into service in borrowed kit and no-one in the ground had any idea who he was.
