Comments:

League position: 4th Prior to this game, Liverpool had failed to win any of their first five league games of a year for first time since 1954 in League Division One when they went on to be relegated. The Reds had yet to lose a league game this season (played 12) against a side currently in the top half of the Premier League table (won seven). They had failed to score in only one of their 12 home games so far in this Premier League season. Trent Alexander-Arnold replaced Sadio Mane in the second minute of added time in the second-half. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: "It was how we have to play against Tottenham. We had to show a reaction and it was perfect. It was an outstanding performance offensively in the first half, and defensively in the second half."

League position: 2nd Tottenham Hotspur had now won only one of their last 17 away games in the Premier League against the other clubs currently in the top six (lost ten). This was Spurs' first defeat in their last 12 league and cup games (won nine). They failed to score in consecutive away games for the first time since April 2015. Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino said: "We started the game very sloppy. It is difficult to understand, I am very disappointed in our first-half display. Second-half we reached their level but it is really late."
