Comments:

League position: 5th Liverpool had now kept ten clean sheets in their last 18 games in the Premier League. The Reds had now conceded only one goal in their last eight home games in the Premier League. Mohamed Salah had now scored nine goals in his first 12 Premier League appearances to break the club record previously held by Robbie Fowler (eight in his first 12). Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp said: "As you can imagine, I am really happy about the defending of the whole team and especially the last line, which was really strong, It was just an all-round good performance, a really deserved win and for us very important to push the top of the table a little bit together."

League position: 14th Southampton had now scored only nine goals in the Premier League this season; their fewest after 12 games of a Premier League season since 1998-99 (also nine) when they finished in 17th position. The Saints had now won four of their last 20 Premier League games (lost nine). Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino played 13 games for Liverpool in 2005 and was first team coach at Anfield under Rafa Benitez between 2008 and 2010. Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino said: "For sure it’s not good news for us and we know we are in a difficult moment and now we have to react because every team is really difficult. We tried to change some players, to change positionally and even our style playing more direct with Shane or Charlie but we never create this chance to try to score and be in the game."
