Comments:

League position: 4th Liverpool had now scored 24 goals in their eight league and cup games in 2016-17. It was their highest goals total after the first eight games of a season since 1895-96 (34, all in League Division Two). This was the first time that the Reds had scored four goals or more in each of their first two home games of a league season since 1959-60. 57 years earlier, the second game was a 5-3 win against Hull City. James Milner had now not lost in any of 43 Premier League games when he had scored (won 35). Only Darius Vassell had now scored and not lost in more games in Premier League history (46).

Comments:

League position: 12th This game was played on caretaker manager Mike Phelan's 54th birthday. Only Colin Todd had suffered a heavier Premier League defeat as a manager on his birthday. It was in Derby County’s 5-0 loss to Manchester United on 12 December 2001 when Phelan was United's first team coach. Along with Ryan Mason, David Marshall made his league defeat for City in this game. The only keeper to concede more than five goals on his league debut for the Tigers was Reuben Bennett (1 -6 at Doncaster Rovers on 22 February 1936 in League Division Two). Bennett later became an original member of the famous Bill Shankly-inspired boot room at Liverpool. City had selected an unchanged starting XI in all five of their previous Premier League games in 2016-17.
