CompetitionAFC Asian Cup Qualifying group D
VenueBeirut
With his goal in this game, Ali Daei equalled the world record for the most goals scored in international football which had been held by Hungary's Ferenc Puskas since 1956 (84 goals). It appeared he had equalled the record earlier in the week with a penalty in an Asian Cup qualifier against Korea DPR. However, the game was subsequently abandoned due to crowd disturbances. As Korea DPR refused to continue, Iran were awarded a 3-0 win and Ali's goal was expunged.
