Kick-off 7.00pm local (11.00pm BST) Man of the Match: Enner Valencia (Ecuador) Assistant referees: Matthew Cream (Australia) Hakan Anaz (Australia) Fourth official: Yuichi Nishimura (Japan) Fifth official: Toru Sagara (Japan) The two teams had met in 14 previous matches, all in friendlies, most recently in 2013, a 2–2 draw. The two coaches, fellow Colombians Luis Fernando Suárez and Reinaldo Rueda, had previously managed their opponents: Suárez managed Ecuador in the 2006 World Cup, while Rueda managed Honduras in the 2010 World Cup. Honduras midfielder Wilson Palacios was suspended for the match, having received a red card against France. Ecuador enjoyed the best of the early exchanges with Enner Valencia having the best chance, going through on goal but putting his shot wide. On 31 minutes, Carlos Costly took advantage of a defensive error to score Honduras' first goal in the World Cup since his father (Anthony Costly) was in the side which drew with Northern Ireland in 1982. Two minutes later Enner Valencia equalised with a poachers goal from two yards out. Honours were even at half time, but both teams showed great physical commitment with some memorably crunching tackles on display. After some exciting end-to-end play Enner Valencia put Ecuador ahead in the 65th minute, heading in from a well-placed free-kick. Ecuador held off late Honduras pressure to win a famous victory.
