Comments:

France remained unbeaten in their opening game of a UEFA European Championship finals since 1960 against Yugoslavia. They were now unbeaten in their last six games against Germany in Germany (won four). France had now won 15 of their last 20 games at the FIFA World Cup finals and UEFA European Championship finals since 2014. Karim Benzema scored after 85 minutes but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review due to an offside decision.

Comments:

This was the first time that Germany had lost their opening game at a UEFA European Finals tournament; won seven of the previous 12. They had now lost consecutive competitive (non-friendly) home games for the first time; also a FIFA World Cup qualifier against North Macedonia on 31 March 2021 at Duisberg. Three own goals had now been conceded in the first round of group games at Euro 2020; no more than three own goals had ever previously been conceded in a completed UEFA European finals tournament.
