Comments:

Following his return from Manchester United in the summer, Wayne Rooney scored his first goal for Everton since a 1-1 draw at Leeds United in the Premier League on 13 April 2004; a gap of 4,869 days. It was the 199th goal he had scored in the Premier League. Wayne Rooney equalled Frank Lampard and Alan Shearer's competition record of scoring eight goals in the opening game of a Premier League season. This was Everton's second opening game win in their last ten Premier League seasons (also versus Manchester United at Goodison Park in 2012). Everton manager Ronald Koeman said: "The points are really welcome because you don't know what to expect on the first day. It wasn't the performance we like. The team looked nervous on the ball - that's the reason I changed the system at half-time. We need to improve a lot."

Comments:

Manager Mark Hughes had now not won any of his last seven opening day Premier League games (lost five). The Potters had now failed to score in seven of their last nine away games in the Premier League. As they embarked on their tenth consecutive season in the Premier League, Stoke City's only opening day win so far came in 2009 (2-0 versus Burnley). Stoke City manager Mark Hughes said: "The story is all about Wayne Rooney because he has won the game for Everton. The one man you don't want in those situations is Wayne. I'm disappointed with the result but not the performance."
