Comments:

League position: 14th Following the sacking of manager Marco Silva two days earlier, this was Duncan Ferguson's first game in caretaker charge. Everton had lost nine of their opening 15 games in a season in the Premier League for the first time since 1997-98. This was the first time that the Toffees had played a game in the Premier League in December when they started the day in the relegation zone since December 2003. This was the first time that Dominic Calvert-Lewin had scored two goals in a league game since playing for Northampton Town against Carlisle United in League Two on 20 October 2015.

Comments:

League position: 4th Chelsea had now lost three of their last four games in the Premier League for the first time since April 2018. Mateo Kovačić had now scored two goals in his last four games in all club competitions; as many as he had scored in his preceding 163 appearances for the Blues and Real Madrid. Other than their inaugural game in the competition in August 1992, this was the first time that Chelsea had lost a game in the Premier League against a team with a manager taking charge of their first game in the division.
