League position: 20th Crystal Palace became only the third team in English league history to lose their first five league games of a season without scoring a goal (also Hartlepool United in 1938 in Division Three North and Sunderland in 1985 in League Division Two). The Eagles had now failed to score in 450 minutes so far in 2017-18; the longest run from the start of a Premier League season. New boss Roy Hodgson at 70 years and 38 days became the third manager to take charge of a Premier League game in his 70s after Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Robson. He became the first to be appointed after his 70th birthday. Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson said: "We have a really tough programme ahead, and we have to try very hard that people don't dig themselves into a grave. Statistics do that, but only what we do on the field can get us out of it, or make the situation worse. Words are cheap and the work is shown in training and matches, and it's going to be up to the players and coaches to take that responsibility and accept that this is a bad moment for the club."

League position: 9th In his 200th appearance for Southampton in all competitions, Steven Davis scored his first Premier League goal since 15 May 2016 in a 4-1 home win against Crystal Palace. He had now scored 15 goals in the Premier League. Only three other Northern Ireland players had netted more in the competition (Iain Dowie 33, Chris Brunt 24 and Keith Gillespie 17). The Saints had failed to score in nine of their previous 12 Premier League games. Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino said: “To score a goal is the most important for everybody, for the team. I congratulate Steven because he is a really positive guy, always open minded to improve and help in the team. It is a good present for him, the goal, and hopefully he is going to score much more goals to help the team.”
