League position: 2nd On his 50th birthday, Scunthorpe United boss Russ Wilcox equalled a 125-year Football League record. The former Preston North End defender became the first manager to be undefeated in the first 23 league games of his reign since Major William Sudell led Preston's famous Invincibles team in the inaugural Football League season in 1888-89. Sudell was actually the club's chairman and was responsible for the management of the team. He was also the honorary treasurer of the Football League for the first four years of its existence and is said to be responsible for giving the competition its title.
