League position: 13th Pascal Groß's opening goal was Brighton and Hove Albion's first goal in the Premier League and their first in the top division since 14 May 1983 when Gordon Smith scored in a 2-1 loss at Norwich City. This was Albion's first win in the top division since 23 April 1983 when they beat Coventry City 1-0 at the Goldstone Ground. Current West Bromwich Albion coach Gerry Francis was in the Sky Blues' line-up. The Seagulls avoided becoming only the fourth team to fail to score in their opening four games of a Premier League season. Brighton and Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton said: "We're four games into the season. You want to get that first win and if you don't, you don't; we've got a group of lads realistic enough to know it's going to be a tough season. But it is definitely a good feeling to get the win under our belts. I thought we coped with their threats very well."

League position: 8th West Bromwich Albion failed in their attempt to win their opening two away games in a top division season for the first time since 1953. James Morrison's goal was his 29th in the Premier League for the Baggies, putting him just one behind their all-time top scorer in the competition (Peter Odemwingie). Gareth Barry played against his 45th different opposition in the Premier League, so equalling Ryan Giggs' record. West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis said: “There’s all sorts of excuses I could make. Let’s just say today Brighton were better than us and keep it at that. The fact some of them hadn’t come back [from international matches]. The centre-half has played in Uganda and Egypt. The centre-forward has played in Argentina and Venezuela. Quite a few of the others have been around the world a few times. They looked a bit tired and jaded today.”
