Kick-off: 4.00pm local Play was suspended after five minutes when Brazilian health officials walked on to the pitch to confront the three Premier League players in Argentina's starting XI (Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa and Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero of Tottenham Hotspur) who were accused of breaking Brazilian COVID-19 rules after traveling from the UK within the last 14 days and not quarantining. Aston Villa's Emi Buendia was also a member of the Argentina's travelling squad but had not been selected. The game was subsequently abandoned. CONMEBOL confirmed: "The referee and the match commissioner will submit a report to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, which will determine the steps to be followed. These procedures strictly adhere to current regulations." On 16 August 2022, with both teams having qualified for the 2022 World Cup finals, it was confirmed that the game would not be replayed. The Argentinian Football Association (AFA), the Brazilian Football Association (CBF) and FIFA resolved the dispute at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The AFA was fined 150,000 Swiss francs.
