Kick-off: 9.00pm local Belgium v Japan was Match 54 of the FIFA World Cup 2018 Refereeing team: Referee: Malang Diedhiou (Senegal) Assistant Referee 1: Djibril Camara (Senegal) Assistant Referee 2: El Hadji Samba (Senegal) Fourth Official: Bakary Gassama (Gambia) Reserve AR: Jean Birumushahu (Burundi) VAR: Felix Zwayer (Germany) Belgium had now reached the World Cup quarter-finals in consecutive tournaments for the first time. Nacer Chadli scored Belgium's winning goal in the fourth minute of added time at the end of the game to complete the first winning comeback after trailing by at least two goals in a knock-out game at the World Cup finals since West Germany's 3-2 win against England in 1970. It was the first time this feat was achieved within 90 minutes since Portugal beat Korea DPR 5-3 in the 1966 quarter-final at Everton's Goodison Park. There had now been nine winning goals scored in the 90th minute at this World Cup finals, compared to ten in total in the preceding five tournaments. Belgium had still yet to keep a clean sheet in their 12 knock-out games at the World Cup finals. Belgium remained unbeaten in their last 23 games (won 18) since their defeat by Spain in September 2016. Genki Haraguchi's goal was Japan's first-ever goal in the knock-out stages of the World Cup finals. Japan’s two previous knock-out games at the World Cup finals had produced only one goal (for Turkey in 2002). They also drew nil-nil after extra-time against Paraguay in 2010 with Japan losing 5-3 on penalties.
