The Austrians almost recorded the quickest-ever goal in European Championship finals history but David Alaba's shot after 28 seconds hit the post. Hungary recovered from the early shock and took the lead when Adam Szalai converted Laszlo Kleinheiser's pass. Austria's problems increased when Aleksandar Dragovic was sent-off for a second bookable offence before Zoltan Stieber sealed Hungary's win with a calm finish. The victory sealed a memorable day for Gabor Kiraly. The veteran keeper became the first 40 year-old (40 years and 74 days) to play at the European Championship finals. The previous holder of the tournament's oldest-ever player record was Germany's Lothar Matthaus (39 years and 91 days).
