League position: 19th Manager Tim Sherwood was sacked the following day when Sunderland's win against Newcastle United sent Aston Villa to the bottom of the table. The former Tottenham Hotspur boss had been in charge for only 28 competitive games - the shortest reign of any permanent Villa manager. Villa had not now won in the Premier League since the opening day of the 2015-16 season and had now lost eight of their ten games. Jordan Ayew's goal was Villa's first in the month of October in all competitions since 30 October 2012 a 3-2 win at Swindon Town in the Capital One Cup.
