League position: 7th Aston Villa failed in their attempt to win five of their opening six games of a season in the top division for the third time in their history; previously 1906-07 and 1930-31 in League Division One. Following their 7-2 win against reigning champions Liverpool at Villa Park on 4 October 2020, Villa had now conceded seven goals in their last two home games in the Premier League (scored three). Prior to this game, they had the best defensive record so far in this Premier League season having conceded five goals and kept three clean sheets. Ollie Watkins converted a penalty in the third minute of added time at the end of the game before Jack Grealish added Aston Villa's third goal four minutes later.

League position: 4th With their second goal in this game, Southampton became the 11th team to score 1,000 goals in the Premier League. This was the first time they had scored four or more goals in an away game in the Premier League since their visit to Watford on 4 March 2017 (won 4-3). 26 year-old James Ward-Prowse became the second player to score a goal for the Saints on his birthday; also Neil Maddison against Sheffield United at The Dell on 2 October 1993. They led by three or more goals at half-time in a game in the Premier League for the first time since a 6-1 win against Aston Villa at St Mary’s Stadium on 16 May 2015 (5-1 at half-time).
