Comments:

League position: 10th Aston Villa remained unbeaten in five consecutive home games in the Premier League for the first time since January 2015. Leon Bailey became the second Villa player to come as a substitute, score and then be substituted in a game in the Premier League after Julian Joachim against Derby County on 30 September 2000. They had now kept a clean sheet in three of their last 17 games in the Premier League. John McGinn's replacement after 40 minutes was regarded as a concussion substitution, therefore allowing both teams the possibility to make four substitutions during the game.

Comments:

League position: 5th Everton failed in their attempt to remain unbeaten in the first five league games in consecutive seasons for the first time. The Toffees had now lost three of their last 18 away games in the Premier League (won ten). This was their first defeat under Rafael Benítez and his first defeat in his ten visits to Villa Park during his managerial career (won four). Everton named eight of a possible nine substitutes.
