League position: 2nd Olivier Giroud became the first Arsenal player to score a goal and concede an own goal in the same Premier League game since Thomas Vermaelen in a 1-1 draw against Fulham on 26 November 2011. The Gunners had now conceded nine goals in their last 17 Premier League home games. Prior to this game, they had scored only eight goals in their six Premier League home games in this season. Aaron Ramsey scored in the third minute of added time in the second half.

League position: 18th Sunderland failed in their attempt to win three consecutive Premier League games for the first time since May 2014. Recently appointed Black Cats boss Sam Allardyce had now lost eight consecutive Premier League games against Arsenal. He had not now recorded a league win against the Gunners since 3 May 2010 when he was in charge of Blackburn Rovers. Sunderland had now lost six of their eight league away games so far in this season.
