Final league position 2016-17: 5th Arsenal finished outside the top four in the Premier League for the first time since 1995-96, so for the first time under manager Arsène Wenger. It meant they failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. The Gunners set a new record of winning 75 points for the team finishing 5th in a Premier League season. Laurent Koscielny became the first player to be sent-off in the opening 15 minutes of more than one game in the Premier League (also after ten minutes against Manchester City on 13 January 2013). Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said: "The players came back stronger in the past two months and I'm very proud of them for doing that. I was focused on my job. I am professional. I love this club enough to do my best every single day. One thing you cannot question is my love for this club. I've turned down every club in the world to stay here."

Final league position 2016-17: 7th Everton finished in the top seven for the first time since 2013-14 under Roberto Martínez (5th). The Toffees were now without a win in their last eight away games in the Premier League (lost four). Romelu Lukaku became the first player to score 25 goals in a league season for Everton since Gary Lineker in 1985-86 in League Division One (30). Everton manager Ronald Koeman said : "We saw today what we need for the next season. We need more productivity out of possession. That's the difference between us and Arsenal. We did everything to win the game but we had to score in the first-half. It was a long time 11 v 10 and a penalty isn't enough."
