League position: 12th This was new manager Mikel Arteta's first home game in charge. Arsenal had now lost four consecutive home games in all competitions for the first time since December 1959 (all in League Division One). The Gunners had now lost three consecutive home games in the top division for the first time since March 1977 in League Division One. They had now won one of their last 15 games in all competitions (at West Ham United in the Premier League on 9 December 2019). The Gunners took 56 points from their games in the Premier League in 2019; on a three points for a win basis, their lowest points total in a year since 1976 (54).

League position: 4th Chelsea avoided losing four games in the Premier League in a month for the first time since October 1993. They had now lost one of their last 17 final games of a year (won 12). Tariq Lamptey became the fifth player aged 21 or under to make their Premier League debut for the Blues so far in this season. Chelsea and Newcastle United remained as the only two teams that had yet to draw an away game so far in this Premier League season.
