CompetitionFA Cup Final
VenueWembley Stadium
Kick-off: 5.30pm The 139th FA Cup Final was played behind closed doors due to COVID-19 restrictions. This was the latest date that the Final had been played in the competition’s history. Chelsea also played in the earliest FA Cup Final. The 1970 Final against Leeds United was played on 11 April due to the FA's request to allow the England team to prepare for their defence of the World Cup in Mexico. The game was officially titled the Heads Up FA Cup Final as part of a the Football Association's campaign regarding mental health awareness promoted by the FA president, Prince William. Arsenal had now won all three of their FA Cup Finals against Chelsea; also in 2002 and 2017. Arsenal had now reached a record 21 FA Cup Finals and had now also won the competition a record 14 times. This was Chelsea's 14th FA Cup Final; only Arsenal (21) and Manchester United (20) had now played in more. Having refereed the FA Cup Final between Arsenal and Chelsea in 2017, Anthony Taylor became the eighth referee to take charge of more than one FA Cup Final and the first since Arthur Kingscott in 1901. This was the first FA Cup Final since 2012 when both managers had also played for their teams in an FA Cup Final (Chelsea with Roberto di Matteo versus Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool). Prior to this game, only two players had played for both clubs in a FA Cup Final fixture; Francis Birley for Oxford University against Wanderers in 1873 and for Wanderers against Oxford University in 1877, while Jack Reynolds played for both Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion in 1892 and 1895. In this Final, both Chelsea's Olivier Giroud and Arsenal's David Luiz played for their opponents in the Final in 2017.

Comments:

Arsenal had now equalled Tottenham Hotspur's competition record (between 1901 and 1982) of winning in seven consecutive FA Cup Final appearances. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had now scored five goals in three appearances in the FA Cup; also scored both goals in the Semi-final win against Manchester City. After George Graham, Mikel Arteta became the second man to manage Arsenal in an FA Cup Final having also played for them in one. He became the first to win the FA Cup with the Gunners as both a captain and a manager. Arsenal had now qualified for Europe competition for 25 consecutive seasons. At 31 years and 44 days, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang became the oldest player to score for Arsenal in a FA Cup Final since Bob John against Newcastle United in 1932 (aged 33 years and 80 days).

Comments:

Former Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud failed in his attempt to become the second player to score for and against a club in separate FA Cup Finals; after Frank Stapleton who scored against Manchester United in the 1979 Final for Arsenal then for the Red Devils in the 1983 Final against Brighton and Hove Albion. Mateo Kovačić became the sixth player to be sent-off in a FA Cup Final and the first since Chelsea's Victor Moses against Arsenal in 2017 which was also refereed by Anthony Taylor. At 21 years and 318 days, Christian Pulišić became the youngest goalscorer in a FA Cup Final since Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United in 2004 (19 years and 106 days). At 38 years and 308 days, Willy Caballero became the oldest player to play for Chelsea in a FA Cup Final. Having used their five substitutes and had a player sent-off, Chelsea played in the closing minutes of added time at the end of the game with nine men as Pedro was withdrawn due to injury.
