Kick-off 1.00pm local (5.00pm BST) An estimated 100,000 Argentine fans poured in to Sao Paulo to see the Albicelestes reach the quarter-finals in Brazil. While the mercurial Lionel Messi insisted another World Cup starts here, an air of sadness had descended on the Swiss squad. Winfried Hitzfeld, the elder brother of Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, died on the eve of the game. The news came as an especially sad blow for the veteran coach, who had said that his side's knockout match with favourites Argentina would be the highlight of his long and glittering career. A rather disappointing first half saw Argentina dominate possession but make few opportunities whilst Switzerland had the best chances on the break. The standard of play in the second half was even more disappointing, with passes going astray and chances spurned - the highlight being a brave save by Benaglio on 78 minutes. Neither side looked capable of scoring in extra time - although the game was played almost exclusively in the Swiss half. Then, two minutes from the end of the second half of extra time, Di Maria, who had expended more energy uselessly than any other player on the pitch, met a Messi pass into the area and scored. Dzemaili had a splendid headed effort in the dying seconds which hit the woodwork but Swiss hearts were broken.
