Comments:

After losing the previous three, AFC Bournemouth won their opening game of a Premier League season for the first time. The Cherries had yet to lose a home game in the Premier League against a newly promoted team (won seven, drawn two). Eddie Howe remained unbeaten in seven league games against Cardiff City as a manager (won two).

Comments:

Cardiff City had now lost on the opening day in two of their last 11 seasons (won five) but both had been in their two Premier League seasons (also 2013-14). In the 34th minute, Neil Etheridge became the first goalkeeper to save a penalty on his Premier League debut since Allan McGregor for Hull City against Chelsea in August 2013. He also became the first player to have represented the Philippines to appear in the Premier League. Veteran manager Neil Warnock had yet to win an opening game of a top division season (drawn one, lost three); also with Notts County in 1991-92, Sheffield United in 2006-07 and Queens Park Rangers in 2011-12.
