Comments:

This was AFC Bournemouth's first-ever game in the top division. They became the 47th club to play in the Premier League. The Cherries, before this match, were unbeaten in the last ten home league matches, winning five of the last six.

Comments:

This was the first time in four attempts that Aston Villa had beaten a newly promoted Premier League side on the opening day of the season; previously one draw and two defeats. The Villans had now won a third consecutive season opener. This was also their fifth successive away season opener. Last season Aston Villa was the only team not to have a goal scored by a substitute in the Premier League, matter rectified in this match by Rudy Gestede on his debut. Ciarran Clark was booked in the first minute of added time in the first half. Ashley Westwood was booked in the second minute of added time in the second half.
