The Nederlandse Voetbal en Atletiek Bond (NVAB) was founded in The Hague in 1889. The athletics section was dropped in 1895 to become the Nederlandse Voetbalbond (NVB) and was one of FIFA’s founder members in 1904. Professionalism wasn’t embraced until the 1950s however.

Shortly following Feyenoord becoming the first Dutch club side to win a European trophy, the national team came to prominence in the 1970s with their invention of 'Total Football,' a concept that was pioneered by revolutionary coach Rinus Michels in which any outfield player can take over the role of any other player in a team.

Inspired by the great Johan Cruyff, the Dutch reached the World Cup final in Germany in 1974, a feat they repeated in 1978 and 2010.

Rinus Michels returned in 1988 as a fabulous team containing the likes of Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkaard and Koeman went one step further to lift the European Championship trophy after beating the Soviet Union in the final, again in Munich.

Netherlands rose to number one in the FIFA world rankings in August 2001. They became the second national football team, after Spain, to top the rankings without previously winning a World Cup.
